New York, NY, September 27, 2017 Arts Brookfield presents the return of the annual gravity-defying Canstruction design competition and most unique food charity to Brookfield Place (230 Vesey St.) for its 25th anniversary. From Thursday, November 2 to Wednesday, November 15, 27 teams will compete for awards by building larger-than-life creations from unopened cans of food, which are then disassembled and donated to City Harvest. An incredibly popular artistic event, last year’s competition welcomed over 40,000 visitors, allowing City Harvest to collect 64,000 pounds of food – enough to feed more than 21,000 hungry families in New York City for one day. While admission to Canstruction is free, visitors are encouraged to contribute by bringing non-perishable cans of food for donation at the 2nd level of 230 Vesey Street.

Canstruction Fast Facts:

Arts Brookfield has partnered with Canstruction for the annual competition since 2007 and the friendly food fight returns to Brookfield Place for its 10th anniversary. The 27 teams competing are comprised of New York’s top architects, engineers, and students who plan their submissions for months in advance, with visions of larger-than-life pop art that will spark reflection. The planning culminates in an energetic evening where all participants must finish their designs in one overnight build. Awards will be given in different categories such as Best Meal, Structural Integrity, People’s Choice, and Best Original Design.

Arts Brookfield is incredibly proud to be hosting Canstruction for a tenth year; the creative event marks an annual Thanksgiving tradition that embodies the spirit of generosity,” said Elysa Marden, Vice President, Arts Brookfield. “We hope that visitors will be inspired to spread awareness about those who are in need.

“For 25 years, Canstruction New York has been the most extraordinary design competition for architects, engineers and contractors that not only raises awareness about hunger but also provides a solution with thousands of cans of food donated to City Harvest.” said Katie Devlin, AIA, President of Canstruction New York Inc. “The exhibition has to be seen in person to fully comprehend the artistry of each sculpture.”

All of the food from both the competition and visitor donations are donated to City Harvest, making Canstruction the largest annual donation of canned food from a single event to the organization. Founded in 1982, City Harvest is the world’s first food rescue organization, helping to feed New Yorkers in need by collecting high-quality food and delivering it to soup kitchens, food pantries, and other community food programs.

“For many New Yorkers, income hasn’t kept up with the rising cost of living, and many households lack the income needed to cover basic necessities like food, housing, transportation, and childcare. Nearly 1.3 million residents struggle to put meals on their tables, and City Harvest is committed to rescuing and delivering 59 million pounds of food this year to ensure that our neighbors in need have enough food. For 25 years, Canstruction has been an important partner in our hunger relief work,” said Jilly Stephens, Chief Executive Officer of City Harvest. “We are proud to once again rescue food from this year’s exhibition and distribute it to 500 community food programs across New York City’s five boroughs.

Canstruction is presented in partnership with Arts Brookfield, well-known for presenting diversity in the arts and making world-class cultural experiences accessible. For more information about Canstruction as well as Arts Brookfield’s full schedule of events, visit

Founded by the Society for Design Administration New York Chapter in 1992, Canstruction® is a trademarked design/build competition currently held in cities throughout North America and around the world. Teams of architects, engineers, and students mentored by these design professionals compete to design and build giant structures made entirely out of full cans of food. It takes 8-12 weeks of design time and thousands of cans of food to create a structure that is built in a single night. The results are displayed to the public as magnificent sculpture exhibits in each city where a competition is held.

The public is invited to donate canned food at the time of the exhibition. At the close of the exhibitions, the cans of food are donated to local food banks. New York is one of more than 150 cities around the world taking part in Canstruction International Competition, which has donated more than 50 million pounds of food to local hunger relief programs since

its founding.
