CURATOR’S STATEMENT
Urbanscapes brings together the work of six New York artists to reflect on the urban environment they call home. This exhibition, commissioned by Arts Brookfield, highlights the metropolis as a vast and exciting visual landscape in addition to the economic and cultural center we take for granted. While each artist in Urbanscapes utilizes a unique practice in creating their work, all share a common ability to absorb and visualize the ever-changing city around them. Isidro Blasco and Amanda C. Mathis begin by creating freestanding photo-montages that combine two and three dimensions into a unified whole, producing space to reflect on memory and perspective in the bustle of urban life. Joshua R. Marks refocuses our eye on the urban environment by using scale and humor in his witty model-like landscape sculptures, while Ian Jones examines our fluid relationship to architectural forms by morphing them into surreal, yet empathetic shapes. Pedro Cruz-Castro refigures and collages elements from furniture into sculptural patterns, making them recognizable and dreamlike at the same time. Erin Sweeny absorbs herself in the study of the environment around her, literally using pulped book pages as a building block to find our place in the urban mosaic.
