Swing and experience collective music-making in this interactive art installation! The Swings: An Exercise in Musical Cooperation is a giant, collective musical instrument that brings together people of all ages and backgrounds. Each swing represents one of four instruments—piano, harp, guitar, vibraphone—and triggers sound when participants swing back and forth. As certain melodies emerge through cooperation between players, The Swings fosters a sense of community and ownership of public space.
Created by Daily tous les jours, a Montreal-based design studio with a focus on participation and collective experience, the original 21 Swings new media art installation has attracted millions to the Quartier des spectacles area in Montreal, where each swing is swung an average of 8,500 times daily. A proven track record for encouraging collaborations and sparking conversation between strangers, The Swings bring vibrancy to an empty space by encouraging people of all ages and backgrounds to gather and experiment.
The Swings was made possible with generous support from the Counseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ).
