Mon-Fri, 8 AM - 6 PM

Total Plaza

Houston, TX 77002

Artists Billy Hassell and Isaac Smith may use different mediums to share their desired message, but the theme is the same – a fascination with the environment and animals. A collection of their works will be displayed in an upcoming exhibition titled Second Nature, which will be located at Total Plaza in downtown Houston. Presented by Arts Brookfield, which animates public spaces through the presentation of free cultural experiences in Brookfield’s premier buildings, the exhibition is free and open to the public during its May 3 – Sept. 8, 2016 duration.

When we hear, “It’s second nature to him,” we really mean it is actually his first nature. It is fundamental and is seemingly inherent. It is easy. And when something is second nature, it is of the core. It most often is true and clear, honest and direct, as is the art of Billy Hassell and Isaac Smith. Hassell paints the freshness and the fragility of our world, seeing all of us, animals included, as one big extended family. And as a woodcarver, Smith uses a chainsaw and a hatchet, painting animals in the bright colors of his imagination. Together, the works of Billy Hassell and Isaac Smith sing to us of humor, of the fierceness of the lion and the softness of the flower petal, of the unity of all.

Curated by Sally Reynolds.

Opening Reception: May 19, 5:30 – 7 PM
Free to the public!
