PeopleScapes features artwork that focuses on people and the human element placed within diverse settings. A broad variety of styles and media will be represented by established and emerging artists. Some of the artworks are based on portraiture, while others are more figurative. There is a context of place to each body of work, either cityscape, landscape or even a dreamscape of the internal imaginings of the subject or the artist.
Wes Magyar and Tony Ortega offer paintings that place humans within the context of an urban landscape, while Margaretta Gilboy and Ron Hicks place their subjects within a more intimate or interior setting. Jerry de la Cruz, Constance Earl and Jelisa Peterson present a more traditional view of the portrait through painting, photography and drawing, though the faces of the subjects themselves suggest interior human landscapes.
In a totally different approach, Darrell Anderson weaves his portraits into an abstracted, almost kaleidoscope fracturing of colors and forms, while Michael Gadlin weaves portraits abstractly through thick paint, but with a heavier gestural brushstroke. Both artists ask the viewer to imagine the type of place surrounding the image of face or figure.
Ted Preuss literally prints photographs directly onto bleached leaves and Ed Fairburn creates portraits in mixed media on top of the surfaces of actual maps, both artists giving the human element a direct relationship to place.
