Opening Set by DJ Babu
Time: Bar & DJ at 7:30 pm, Performance at 9 pm
The FIGat7th Downtown Festival returns this summer to LA’s premier shopping and dining destination! The outdoor plaza is transformed into an intimate concert venue for six consecutive Friday nights with performances by leading pop, rock, jazz, soul and alternative artists.
It would be hard to imagine the alternative rap scene without Lyrics Born. The Bay Area rapper/producer/entrepreneur has been at the forefront of conscious rap since his debut single “Send Them.” That 1993 record kicked off not only his career, but also introduced the world to DJ Shadow and was the first release on Solesides, the label he co-founded with Lateef the Truthspeaker.
He’s barely stopped since, running the Solesides and Quannum Projects labels, releasing six albums under his own name and two as one-half of Latyrx. Add in collaborations with Blackalicious, DJ Shadow, Gift of Gab, avant-popsters tUnE-yArDs, and singer-songwriter Sam Sparrow and you begin to understand the gamut of talent he works with and embodies.
On his 2015 album “Real People,” Lyrics Born collaborated with New Orleans musicians spanning generations of the Crescent City’s finest including: the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Ivan Neville, Trombone Shorty, and the city’s premiere jam band, Galactic. For his show at the FIGat7th Downtown Festival on August 12, he’ll be appearing with an eight-piece band and playing material from his new greatest hits collection titled “Now, Look What You’ve Done, Lyrics Born!”
Born Chris Oroc, DJ Babu is a member of DJ crew The Beat Junkies and legendary hip-hop crew Dilated Peoples. The California-based DJ began making mix tapes in the early 90s and has won multiple competition titles including the DMC Championship in 1997. As a revered battle DJ he has produced one of the genre’s most popular battle records, “Super Duck Breaks” (1996), and its follow-up, “Super Duper Duck Breaks” (2000). His work with the Dilated Peoples include “The Platform” (2000), “Expansion Team” (2001), and “Neighborhood Watch” (2004), which produced the hit “This Way” with Kanye West. All are hailed as exemplary examples of quality, back-to-basics, hip-hop and serve as torchbearers for old school hip-hop diehards. DJ Babu will open the show at 7:30 pm, providing a fresh mix of his hip-hop genius, followed by Lyrics Born at 9 pm.
Come early and stay late for great shopping, drinking, and dining at FIGat7th! Festival Bar by Loteria Grill, proceeds benefit the DTLA Art Walk.
