4 PM Anthony Valadez + Aaron Paar
5 PM Nikko Gray
A fresh addition to the FIGat7th concert schedule, the monthly City Beats shows are curated by local radio personality Anthony Valadez and provide a colorful, sonic snapshot of up-and-coming musicians. Genres include R&B, hip-hop, new jazz, Latin and indie, appealing to the eclectic palette and diverse backgrounds of LA music fans.
It is by no accident that when Nikko Gray sings, you feel haunted. Her voice extends from her core and permeates you; striking straight in the heart, leaving an essence that cannot be washed off no matter how hard you scrub. Born in England to the late child superstar Maureen “Girl” Gray, Nikko was raised in London and Holland before relocating to Los Angeles at the age of 15.
Thanks to her mother’s background, Nikko got an informal but completely submersive training in music from a young age, even joining her mother for recording sessions when she was 5. Not long after moving to LA, Nikko met a young Shwayze at school and formed an instant kinship through music. Hearing the enchantment in her voice when she sang, Shwayze wrote and recorded Nikko’s first solo track that was produced by Dave Wexler (Brainfeeders Strangeloop).
Since then, Nikko has played hundreds of shows all over California. She currently resides in Los Angeles, CA and actively writes and records music.
Aaron Paar (aka DJ Destroyer) is, like so many of his brethren, not just a musician, but an entrepreneur. The longtime host of KXLU’s “Stomping Ground” is also part of the Umoja Hi-Fi Soundsystem and co-founder of Ximeno Records. He brings his mix of house, soul and funk to FIGat7th’s City Beats series September 17, opening for Nikko Gray.
Come early and stay late for great shopping, drinking and dining at FIGat7th!
