Nothing says summer like free outdoor music. For more than two decades, Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) has brought its popular lunchtime concert series to MetroTech Commons in Brooklyn. Spanning R&B, funk, gospel, soul, jazz, and world music, this year’s lineup is packed with new voices and established masters alike, performing Thursdays at noon.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
The spirit of New Orleans comes to MetroTech with the infectious funk sounds and elaborate costumes of Cha Wa. This Grammy-nominated brass band honors the legendary Mardi Gras Indians while building off their vibrant cultural roots, bridging the gap between NOLA street culture and modern R&B. “The term ‘Cha Wa’ basically means ‘We’re coming for you’,” said drummer Joe Gelini. “It’s a Mardi Gras Indian chant […] It’s sort of our rallying cry; it’s how we get our heads in the game on stage, like weapons blazing.”
