DOGUMENTA Reaches New Audience of Creative Canines in New Public Art Installation

America’s First Art Exhibition Created for Dogs Opens at Brookfield Place New York August 11

New York, NY, May 9, 2017 From August 11 to 13, Arts Brookfield presents dOGUMENTA, America’s first art exhibition for dogs, at Brookfield Place New York. Not by or about dogs, dOGUMENTA is a curated art show for dogs. The exhibition is the first in America to ask artists to address the canine community’s concerns, interests and worldview and to make artwork catering to a four-legged sensibility. Featuring original artworks intended to intrigue and engage our furry friends and free giveaways for pooch and owner.

The concept for dOGUMENTA was born during art critic Jessica Dawson’s New York gallery walks with her rescue dog, Rocky. It was clear that Rocky saw art differently than humans, ignoring New York Times reviews and artist resumes and engaging directly with the work. Dawson realized that Rocky had something to teach human art lovers, and that he and his friends deserved an exhibition of art all their own. dOGUMENTA offers an unprecedented opportunity for the creative community to engage with a new breed of art lover and to consider its new points of view.

“dOGUMENTA offers an unparalleled opportunity to reach an entirely new art world audience… one Arts Brookfield certainly has yet to tap into,” said Elysa Marden, vice president, Arts Brookfield. “We are thrilled to host New York’s creative canine community (and their humans) for this first-of-its-kind exhibition experience.”

“I was surprised to see that Rocky could sniff out some of the best artwork in New York,” said Jessica Dawson, founding curator, dOGUMENTA. “I realized that a canine sensibility might be the key to navigating today’s complex art world.”

dOGUMENTA’s curatorial team  is commissioning ten new artworks by established and emerging New York City artists. Artworks will align with the artists’ established practice and also take into account canine experience and perception. 4-legged exhibition-goers will encounter work in a range of media that address formal, conceptual and experiential elements such as color, sound, scent and touch.

A radical, pioneering exhibition, dOGUMENTA takes its name from Documenta, the major art survey that takes place every five years in Kassel, Germany. Considered the gold standard of exhibitions of contemporary art, Documenta, like dOGUMENTA, is energizing, exciting and unexpected.

dOGUMENTA runs from August 11 to 13, with carefully chosen hours of 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. to be respectful of the heat sensitivities of our four-legged friends. dOGUMENTA is part of part of a year-round calendar of unique, free events presented in unexpected places by Arts Brookfield for the New York community.
