CultureStream presents a video fresco which alludes to Federico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita. Intersecting with Fellini’s favorite themes of uncertainty, political and social impasse, gossip, and decadence in post-war Italy, “Telegrams on the Table” includes contributions by several of Fellini’s close friends, namely Fabio Mauri and Pier Paolo Pasolini as well as contemporary artists, filmmakers, philosophers, and composers.

Now in its eleventh year, the Mountain Stage NewSong Contest is one of the premier showcases of emerging performing songwriters in North America. In celebration of the opening of The Sweet LIFE exhibition, the legendary downtown band Sex Mob takes on the music of the great Italian film composer Nino Rota, frequent collaborator of director Federico Fellini.

This special exhibition of photographs features Italian actors and directors who appeared on the pages of LIFE Magazine during the 1950’s, the “golden age” of Italian cinema. The actors-Loren, Mastroianni, Lollabrigida, Masina, and the directors-Rossellini, DeSica, Fellini, Antonioni, were as famous for their amazing talents as they were for their colorful private lives. LIFE captured all of these stars in various stages of celebrity and in some cases, scandal.

The project takes its name from the latitudinal circle that divides the globe into north and south, the same circle that was used to draw the U.S. Mason-Dixon Line. This historically important demarcation remains critical to global trade today, as a home to global economic centers and as a media tour of labor markets and migration.

The composition is constructed from visual references to global trade and labor. An initial interest in the African American Burial Ground in lower Manhattan lead to research on the quilt patterns used for communication in the Underground Railroad, a system of iconic visual communication that was integrated into trade routes.

Its pattern, inspired by quilt design, is populated by a hybrid iconography drawn from states’ flags and emblems as well as the logos of companies with a relationship to the 36º 30’ parallel, cumulatively weaving together a history of global trade.

Cinema Tropical’s El Futuro Más Acá is a quirky and stirring film series originally curated by Itala Schmelz, Vania Rojas, and Héctor Orozco, featuring some of the most iconic Mexican sci-fi films made during the 1940s through the 1960s. You will discover how a robot can befriend a tough rancher from Chihuahua, which cabaret entertainers are actually from another galaxy, and that spaceships fly over the canals of Xochimilco. Cinema Tropical is the leading presenter of Latin American cinema in the United States.

Characterized by his improvisational style and elaborate compositions, Thelonious Monk was a herald of bebop and a jazz innovator. This annual series, which counts down to Monk’s 100th birthday, features celebrated pianists including Michael Cochrane, Jean-Michel Pilc, Manuel Valera, Elio Villafranca, and James Weidman.

Radio Jarocho plays son jarocho music inspired by the towns, musicians, and swampy countryside of Veracruz, Mexico. Tonight, they will lure audiences into a Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) fandango – a popular folkloric celebration in Mexico with music, dance, and costumes. The fandango will include a traditional dance lesson, followed by a rousing dance party featuring the band and other jarocho musicians from around New York, with visuals by Cinema Tropical.

Canstruction® is an extraordinary annual design competition and the most unique food charity in the world. This year, you can join Canstruction® in celebrating its monumental 20th anniversary of charitable work in New York City! Over 25 teams of architects, engineers, contractors, and the students they mentor will compete to build enormous structures made entirely out of unopened cans of food, which are then on view to the public until they are dismantled and donated to City Harvest for distribution to those in need. Admission is free, but visitors are asked to bring a can of high quality food to the exhibition’s collection station in an attempt to surpass the exhibition’s donation of over 50,000 pounds of non-perishable edibles!
