Arts Brookfield celebrates Make Music New York 2013 with an afternoon honoring the jazz saxophone! New York City – Mecca for the saxophone – is where Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson, Charlie Parker, Albert Ayler, Jimmy Heath, and others came as unknowns and made their own unique contributions to the greatness of jazz, and in the process became legendary giants of the idiom. Some of the hippest voices of today’s jazz shine over three 15-minute solo sets at six different locations. Bring a lunch, join the musical journey, and experience a unique adventure that could only happen in New York City.

British-born James Maddock first gained notoriety in the US as leader of the band, Wood. Their album, Songs From Stamford Hill, produced the Top 5 hit, “Stay You,” which included in a Dawson’s Creek soundtrack, and remains a fan favorite more than a decade after it was released. As a solo artist, Maddock has released Sunrise On Avenue C, winner of the 2010/11 NY Music Award for “Best Americana Album;” Wake Up and Dream, named one of the top albums of 2011 by a WFUV Listener’s Poll; and Another Life, his newest work released May 2013. Maddock has become a mainstay on non-commercial and satellite radio and continues to tour extensively.

HUNGRY MARCH BAND

Roaring out of Brooklyn comes the Hungry March Band (HMB), New York City’s legendary brass ensemble that embodies the spirit of city streets with their inimitable brass sound and inspired eclectic dance. Founded in 1997 for the Coney Island Mermaid Parade, HMB has shared their creativity with audiences around the United States, South America, and Europe, where they’ve been enveloped into a longstanding community of brass bands. Their planned and spontaneous performances have included guerilla art events, mermaid parades, rural raves, European jazz and circus festivals, subway parties, eccentric weddings, community affairs, protests, high art events, and many other forays into the territories of free spirit.

Quickly moving up through the ranks of young vocalists, Jaime Coryn Woods is an artist to look out for. Hailing from Chicago where she discovered her musical side within the gospel scene, she migrated East to study at the Berklee College of Music. She has since performed up and down the coast, sharing the stage with the likes of Bilal, Jennah Bell, Lalah Hathaway, and poetry collective The Strivers Row, as well as taking a trip to West Africa to perform with artist Sara Mitaru.
