Heartstreets – the Montreal duo whose sound blends hip hop, R&B, and soul – go way back. Meeting first at nine years old, Gab Godon and Emma Beko immediately bonded over music. “We used to do hip-hop choreography together for shows in elementary school,” Beko has said. “Then in high school, we would sing on the bus and stuff like that.”

Fast forward fifteen years and Godon and Beko have released their debut EP, You and I, to much acclaim. In “Crawling South,” the first single released from the EP, Godon’s sultry voice comes together perfectly with Beko’s rap-style storytelling to reflect on a relationship that came apart. The heartbreaker, which charted at number six on Spotify’s Viral 50 Chart, was released with a video showing the heartbroken sifting through a “break-up box” of memorabilia. Complex said of the song that it “mirrors that gut-wrenching feeling of blowing the dust off the top of that box, and digging into a trove of memories, good and bad, like some kind of wistful relationship archaeologist.”
