Jazz never stands still…it constantly evolves and reinvents itself. See this phenomena in action every 2nd and 4th Friday at Bank of America Plaza from April through October. Angel City Jazz, a non-profit committed to cultivating jazz culture in LA through its annual Angel City Jazz Festival, has partnered with Arts Brookfield to program this series.
Miller Wrenn is a bassist, composer, and educator whose compositions and performances are concerned with the tangibility of artistic intention and unifying elements of composition and improvisation into one essential whole. As a bassist he is regarded for his versatility and deep knowledge of many musical traditions.
Miller performs with and composes for a multitude of collective musical ventures, as well as for his own projects. He is a member of Off Cell, a forward-thinking quartet comprised of musicians from Los Angeles and Dallas, which released its debut recording in February of 2017. As both a performer and composer, he is a member of the New Music chamber group EnsembleVomma, which recently premiered his long-form work, The Shape of Them Dissolving, at ArtShare LA along with two premieres of renowned composer/violinist Mark Menzies.
Recently and most notably, Miller Wrenn performed the world premiere of John Cage’s “all sides of the small stone for Erik Satie” at the RedCat Theater in Los Angeles. Miller’s ensemble will be performing a set of original and unique compositions which include both lively improvisations and intricate stylings. This particular group is self-described as existing somewhere in the Henry Threadgill/AACM area of things, with a solid dose of Bartok/Stravinsky/Morton Feldman influence.
